How to Apply

EUPI accepts new groups of candidates every other year. The next new class will begin in August, 2016, and that recruitment process has been completed.

If you are interested in applying to the class that starts August 2018, please check back with us in the fall of 2017.

Applicants to the Core Program: Applicants to this program have a serious interest in the study of psychoanalysis and hold a doctoral degree or other professional degree or are enrolled in such a program. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. Each applicant will be interviewed by two faculty members.  The interviews will focus on matters of scholarly interest, achievement, motivation for study and capacity to participate fully in classroom work.

Applicants to the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program: Applicants must be licensed in a clinical discipline (social work, psychology, psychiatry, counseling and others). Each applicant will be interviewed by two faculty members.  In addition to the interest in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, scholarly achievement, motivation for study and capacity to participate fully in classroom work, the interviews include an assessment of suitability for this level of clinical work.  An experience in psychoanalytic psychotherapy is an expectation for candidates in this program.

Applicants to the Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program: Applicants must be one of the following:

  • Licensed physicians in a psychiatric residency or graduated from psychiatric residency.
  • Licensed clinical psychologists with a PhD or PsyD degree.
  • Mental health professionals who have graduated from an accredited mental health degree program with a master's degree. This degree should be recognized as the highest degree within the specific profession.
  • Physicians with specialties outside of mental health; or mental health clinicians who do not meet the criteria for post-graduate study, as approved by the EUPI selection committee.
  • Scientists, academics, scholars, administrator and others whom psychoanalysis is a relevant discipline.

Each of these applicants will be interviewed by three faculty members.  In addition to the interest in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, scholarly achievement, motivation for study and capacity to participate fully in classroom work, the interviews include an assessment of suitability for this level of clinical work.  In addition, these interviews will include an exploration of the applicant's life history in some depth, including one's emotional life and attachments.  An experience in psychoanalysis is an expectation for candidates in this program.
