The Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee (DISC)

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine follows the University School of Medicine’s commitment to ensuring a climate of diversity and inclusion. We welcome and embrace differences in age, sex and gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, indigenous background, culture, national origin, language, religion, spiritual orientation, ability status, social class, education, veteran status, political persuasion, professional interests, and other cultural and professional dimensions. We are committed to recruiting and developing a diverse group of students and innovative leaders in Psychiatry.

Resident Training on Issues with Diversity and Inclusion

  • Seminars on issues related to diversity including treating vulnerable populations, correctional psychiatry, issues in LGBTQ mental health, and building therapeutic alliances with patients that may be culturally different than the residents
  • Clinical electives focusing on issues of diversity/identity (i.e. Gender Center Clinic)
  • Volunteer opportunities to provide mental health treatment to a refugee community (https://www.clarkstonhealth.org/)

Promoting Diversity in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

Department Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee (DISC)

  • Active workgroup that meets monthly and includes faculty members, adjunct faculty, staff, and trainees
  • Seeks to foster a departmental culture of respect, equity, and inclusiveness among its diverse staff, trainees, and faculty
  • Major initiatives include coordinating a diversity consultation service, sponsoring a grand rounds speaker, addressing diversity-related concerns that emerge in the department, providing consultation with regard to enhancing the diversity of our trainees, coordinating diversity trainings within the department, and partnering with other groups in greater Atlanta to provide mental health services and trainings about mental health service provision to the refugee community.

Resident Recruitment

  • Recruitment Committee focuses on recruitment of underrepresented minorities and individuals from other underrepresented groups in residency

Workplace Diversity

  • Monthly updates on issues related to diversity and inclusion in the department newsletter
  • Annual Grand Rounds speaker on topics related to diversity and inclusion

Advisory Council on Community and Diversity (ACCD)

  • Provides a planning and assessment process for all of Emory University and Emory Healthcare
  • Evaluates divisions’ community and diversity plans annually, providing expert feedback to assist divisions in making progress toward their goals
