Emory Psychotherapy Track

The goal of the Emory Psychiatry Residency Psychotherapy Track is to provide an intensive experience for psychiatry residents interested in deepening and broadening their understanding and technical proficiency in psychotherapy.

Brief Description

The Psychotherapy Track is an elective opportunity for PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents to develop their clinical and academic interest in psychotherapy. The track provides for additional clinical experience, supervision, didactics, and includes a scholarly project in an area of psychotherapy. Residents have the opportunity to focus on a particular type of psychotherapy. A resident in the psychotherapy track will be the primary candidate for the role of Outpatient Chief Resident during their PGY-4 year.


Time commitment for the psychotherapy track is as follows: During the PGY-3 year 18-20 hours (5 half days) and during the PGY-4 year 36 hours (9 half days) will be dedicated to psychotherapy activities. 

Clinical Activity

Residents will have between 8-12 hours of weekly face-to-face time with psychotherapy patients in both individual, couples/family, and group format. Additionally, residents will participate in a psychotherapy intake team.

Educational Training

Residents will receive a rich educational experience in the practical application of psychotherapy via the core curriculum, CBT and Psychodynamic case conferences, which take place on a weekly basis. Additionally, residents in the psychotherapy track will participate in additional psychotherapy elective seminars covering a broad range of topics such as family/marital therapy, Short-term psychodynamic therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, all taught by eminent leaders in these fields.

Scholarly Project

Beginning in the 3rd year residents in the psychotherapy track will work with an identified faculty mentor to help develop a research or performance improvement project that will be worked on for 2 years resulting in dissemination of the project during 4th year. As part of the scholarly project residents will attend a weekly research meeting with a faculty member involved in psychotherapy research and co-author a psychotherapy based research paper with one faculty member during the 3rd year and first author a paper on their project during the 4th year.

Outpatient Chief Resident

During the 4th year, as a chief resident, participants in this track will have additional responsibilities including the supervision of PGY-2 residents and participating in the administration of the Outpatient Psychotherapy Training Program and the Outpatient Psychopharmacology Program.


In addition to supervisors in cognitive and dynamic therapy that all residents work with during the 3rd and 4th year, a single mentor/supervisor will provide longitudinal mentorship during the PGY-3 and PGY-4 year. This supervisor will be responsible for providing extra didactic training and overseeing the residents scholarly project. The advisor will have an expertise in the psychotherapy orientation that the resident wishes to specialize in during the 4th year. 

How to Apply

The application and interview process takes place during the spring of the PGY-2 year.

Interested residents should apply by March 1 with:

1) A statement of interest
2) A case-conceptualization from a current patient
3) Two recommendation letters from their 2nd year psychotherapy supervisor and the residency-training director.
